The greatest challenge to operating motorways is the winter season. The duties to be performed increase in number, as the network must be made suitable for safe and fast travel under the changed weather condition.
This goal is aided by motorway traffic safety devices, regular monitoring of the roads, a 24 hour surveillance service, the availability of the necessary machinery and equipment, as well as tried and tested technologies and work organization methods. Hungarian motorway operation is defined by the National Public Road Operating Regulations, which stipulate the highest quality of services. These include:
- gritting is started 0.5–1 hour after detection
- gritting is completed within 2–4 hours
- ploughing must be started upon the forming of 3–5 centimetres of loose snow
- in the case of 15–20 centimetres of fallen snow the amount must be removed within 5 hours after the snowfall stops.
Upon performing the duties demanded by the winter season the operating companies must strive to observe the fundamental aspects of economy, safety and environment.
Preparing for the winter
Preparation for winter starts as soon as the previous winter season ends. It is during this time that the tasks required to preserve the functionality of the devices and equipment is performed. Preparation for the winter starts with the full maintenance and assessment of the machines’ functionality. Depending on the weather, service starts on the 15th of November at the latest, and can end as soon as the 15th of March. Standby allows for quick reaction to any change in the weather: the staff and functional equipment needed to perform the duties are available at all times.
