The M31 motorway was opened to traffic on 26th July in the early evening. The new expressway connects the M0 highway with the M3 motorway. The new 12 km section will be available free of charge for all vehicle categories.
The M31, a part of the European E71 route, will establish a new connection between the M0 highway and the M3 motorway. Not only will the new motorway reduce congestion at the M0-M3 junction and the section of the M3 between Budapest and Gödöllő but it will also shorten the route for Hungarian transit trafficby 15 km. Also, the traffic on main road no. 3 between Kerepes and Kistarcsa and on the M0 highway between Árpádföld and Csömör is expected to be much less heavy.
It is estimated and expected that the concrete-covered dual 2-lane M31 motorway will divert almost half of the M0 eastern section’s daily traffic of 50,000 vehicles in the direction of the M3 / M35 motorways. It is an additional benefit that those wishing to reach Ferihegy Airport from Miskolc, Debrecen or Nyíregyháza will not have to enter Budapest to reach their destination.
The nicely aligned new motorway crossing the Gödöllő Hills starts at the 54 km section of the M0 highway (at Pécel) and reaches the M3 motorway at the 27 km section (at Gödöllő). There are three junctions in the new section.
- At the 0 km section: M0 highway junction (M0 highway)
- At the 9 km section: Main road no. 3 junction (with Kerepes and Gödöllő as destinations)
- At the 12 km section: M3 motorway junction (M3 motorway, with Gödöllő and Szada as destinations)
A new variable message sign and camera system has been installed on both the M31 and the M3 motorways. The new section will be operated by the State Motorway Management Co. Ltd’s Motorway Engineering Office at Gödöllő.
