The State Motorway Management Company Ltd., established on 29 August 2000, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the expressway network under its supervision, and for the electronic collection of data to allow the control of road-use authorisation on toll roads without having to stop vehicles. In terms of numbers, the SMMC is currently overseeing 696 km of motorways, 209 km of main roads, 383 km of junction branches and service area access roads, 125 service areas, and over 1267 bridge sections. The Company handels this activity with its 14 motorway engineering bureaus.

Out of the motorway sections supervised by the Company, a total of 591 km is subject to toll charges for all vehicles, while on 80 km only trucks with a permissible weight of over 3.5 tons are obliged to pay a toll. Vehicles in this latter category are also subject to toll payment on 99 km of highways and primary roads (the electronic data collection required for toll payment control on these roads is also taken care of by the SMMC).
