CONTROL

The payment of the toll can be checked electronically at any point on the road sections where vignettes are compulsory without stopping the vehicles, by reading the registration number. SMMC may – from time to time – also carry out inspections at random locations through mobile inspection units. In such a case, the driver must stop the vehicle and show the vehicle (and the trailer) registration to the inspector for toll category verification. The toll payment controls can be carried out by SMMC with the above methods anywhere on the toll road network - including service areas directly connected to the toll road, as well as intersection lanes leading only to or only from a toll road.

Sales offices on toll road sections are not intended to sell authorisations for the current trip, but to make the purchase easier for future trips. This means that the mobile groups can also check the motorway authorisations at the sales offices alongside the toll motorway sections. At these places the indication of the intention to purchase a motorway usage authorisation  does not exempt the driver from the obligation to pay an excess charge.

IMPORTANT! Motorists must have a valid vignette when entering the motorways!

Please, keep the control coupon in your vehicle for the whole validity period, and we recommend keeping it – in your own interests – for one more year after its expiry!

UNAUTHORISED ROAD USAGE

In event that a vehicle has no valid authorisation at the time of the registration number-based electronic inspection, or, in the case of electronic purchase, the driver does not have a verification message sent by the provider, the motorist must pay an excess charge according to the vehicle’s toll category. If at the time of control the vehicle has a valid authorisation, but in a lower toll category than it actually belongs to, the driver of the vehicle shall pay the difference of the fine established for the lower toll category and the actual category of the motor vehicle.

The excess charge can be paid on the spot (in the case of on-site inspection) or in any of the client service offices, by postal money order or through bank transfer. Should this excess charge not be paid, the owner (operator) of the vehicle – as registered in the database of the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services – is responsible for the payment of the fine. In the case of unauthorised road usage, if the excess charge was not paid on site, the claimed excess charges or excess charge differences expire on the 30th day after the receipt of the payment order (the payment deadline is counted from the day of control, in the case of on-site controls, and in the case of electronic controls, from the receipt of the letter ordering the excess charge payment).

Persons presenting the control coupon or the confirmation message confirming the purchase of the authorisation within 15 days of the receipt of the payment order do not have to pay an excess charge.

In the case of unauthorised road usages on one calendar day, just one excess charge must be paid.

The toll categories are as follows:

 - D1 toll category: motorcycles and motor vehicles with a maximum permissible total weight of 3.5 tons including any kind of trailer,

 - D2 toll category: motor vehicles and motor vehicles with attached trailers (long vehicles) having a maximum permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons, but not more than 7.5 tons

 - D3 toll category: motor vehicles and motor vehicles with attached trailers (long vehicles) having a maximum permissible total weight of more than 7.5 tons, but not more than 12 tons

 - D4 toll category: any vehicles that do not fall into the D1, D2 or D3 categories.

Buses exceeding 7.5 tons are classified one category lower than their weight: i.e. buses and coaches with a maximum total weight between 3.5 tons and 12 tons fall into the D2 category, while buses and coaches over 12 tons belong to the D3 category. The total weight of a motor vehicle and trailer is determined on the basis of the figures recorded in the official vehicle registration papers.

Please be sure to pay the excess charge that is appropriate for the specific payment deadline. Please note that disputing fines will not affect the payment deadlines, as listed above. SMMC accepts onlywritten pleas against the obligation of excess charge payment, to which they send a written reply. In order to speed up administration, please send your remarks to the following address: 2101 Gödöllő, P.O. Box 148.
